The Atlantic City Airshow 2010 “Thunder over the Boardwalk” comes back 100 years after the first airshows where hosted by Asbury Park & Atlantic City. This Airshow, which starts at 11:00 am on Wednesday, 25th Aug ‘10 and continues till 3:00pm, promises to be one of the biggest annual events of Atlantic City with a couple of welcome changes this year.

Sponsored by Harrah’s Entertainment, the Atlantic City Air Show comes forth as the best utilization of the wide expanse of the Atlantic City Beach and Boardwalk. Rightly named as the “Thunder over the Boardwalk”, this eighth annual event of Atlantic City is presented by the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa. A crowd of 750,000 is estimated to witness this mesmerizing display of maneuvers, heart-stopping feats, formation flying, aerobatics and solo routines of military and civilian pilots.

The entire Atlantic City beach & boardwalk seems like a human jungle with millions of tourist flying down from across the globe to get a lifetime experience of witnessing aircrafts being maneuvered by young pilots in the most astonishing ways & advanced jets thundering across the wide Atlantic City skyline.

The key attraction however this year will be the fascinating “Flying Fearless” exhibit celebrating the centenary anniversary of New Jersey airshows. The exhibits will be held at the following locations:

Atlantic City Historical Museum: Daily from 10am – 4pm (609-347-5839)

Atlantic City International Airport: Terminal Building (609-645-7895)

Best Place to Watch Airshow:The best part about this airshow is that, it can be enjoyed from anyplace on the AC Beach & Boardwalk. However, the best places to get a bird eye view of the airshow are undoubtedly the Atlantic City Boardwalk hotels like, Boardwalk Bally’s Atlantic City & Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort.

For Handicaps: For the handicapped, a special viewing area would be available at the pavilion at Montpelier Avenue & the Boardwalk.

Gaming City is a very public-transportation-friendly place. Well it has been made so. With so much to do here the city planners and hoteliers here have worked on making it easy-come easy-go. Which is why there is good travel service for Atlantic City.

Travel companies drop you off at train or bus terminals at 13th and Arch streets. Coming from New York City takes about 2.5 hours. You have NJ Transit, Greyhound and Academy Bus Lines that start off from the Port Authority Terminal on 41st Street and Eighth Avenue. They reach Atlantic City at the new Municipal Bus Terminal, two blocks from the Boardwalk.

Some bus services offer direct transportation to a number of casinos. Most casinos offer bus packages that include value-added premiums. Buses depart from most major cities like New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. As well as from Pittsburgh and Harrisburg in Pennsylvania. These are very convenient for day visitors who want to spend a day at the casinos and go back home.

Having a car makes it easy too. With two major interstate highways close to Atlantic City the run is easy enough from near by places. The Garden State Parkway and the Atlantic City Expressway are convenient. From Philadelphia the trip takes 1 hour. New Yorkers can take the New Jersey Turnpike and be south bound to the Atlantic City Expressway. You can find inexpensive parking at the casinos.

Within the city the Jitney or minibus is a convenient form of public transportation. Operating 24 hours, year-round they run along Pacific Avenue, a block from the Boardwalk. You can do the entire length of the city and stop at major attractions. Routes include the Marina area and with a 2 $ fare they are a real steal.

Atlantic City could get you enjoying a host of sports activities - from motor sports weekends to USTA Professional Circuit Events. And in between you also have sporting activities like - Indoor Racing, Offshore Powerboat Races, Insight Race Across America, Atlantic City Marathon Ocean Swim, World Championship Boxing, AC Archery Classic, NJ State Wrestling Championship, and of course the well known Atlantic City Marathon not to mention the National Cheerleading Competitions.

All these of course offer a thrill out of the ordinary and Atlantic City primes up regularly to facilitate every one to join in and enjoy the sports. In professional sports Atlantic City Surf is its professional baseball team. Its a member of the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball. Not affiliated to the Major League Baseball, the Surf plays home games at Bernie Robins Stadium (former Sandcastle).

From 1998 to 2006, the Surf played in the South Division of the Atlantic League of the Professional Baseball. It was here that The Surf won the first-ever Atlantic League championship in 1998 while also hosting the inaugural Atlantic League All-Star game.

But what have they been doing lately might be your question. Atlantic City has never really enjoyed much success as a venue for professional sports teams. Baseball has been no exception. So if this sport is your choice as more than just an enjoyable pastime you could consider joining the team or league sponsored by Atlantic City.

On February 26, 2008, the Atlantic City Surf named former Major Leaguer Cecil Fielder as their manager for the 2008 season. Hopefully this could be the start to a good season.

Atlantic City offers good opportunities for thorough education from school onwards to distinct streams of knowledge for higher education. With plentiful facilities ranging from fundamental schooling to graduate and doctoral degrees there is a lot of choice in this New Jersey precinct.

Both public and private education facilities can be accessed. There is a wealth of public schools spread throughout the region. And you have alternative schooling besides the public school system with a few private institutions and charter schools as well. Besides you also special educational services to cater to special needs.

The Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT), located at Mays Landing, is one of the top comprehensive technical educational facilities here. ACIT offers students the chance to either join the Academy or study the shared-time programs. Adults can join technical programs through the Evening School while regular students can access the 4 Academy and 17 career programs.

Atlantic city is known for its student population to continue with their studies well ahead on to colleges after completion of school education. For them the city offers the Atlantic Cape Community College as a great choice. The two-year public college with its campus in Mays Landing and a branch in Atlantic City has thousands of students enjoying ACCC’s facilities. You have here more than 40 transfer and career degree programs. Interestingly you do have here casino education and culinary arts programs too!

Besides you also have four year programs available at Pomona campus of Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. This award-winning educational resource holds the distinction as the state’s sole public college to be nationally ranked as a “selective liberal arts college.” Stockton College has both undergraduate and graduate degree programs with equal stress on athletics, clubs and organizations.

Besides other more prominent attractions that make Atlantic City better known you do have here some sedate outdoor pleasures that are especially charming for children and older people. Tired of sauntering on the promenade or being glued to the slot machines many people love to visit the few parks around here.

For one Atlantic City is not really lush with green areas. So the few places offering the outdoors are well loved. The beautiful Cape May is where you could head for to enjoy a jaunt in spacious parks and gardens. Cape May nestles in the backdrop of the beautiful scenery of Point Straight Park.

The Nature Center of Cape May features prime beach and marshland. The Park harbors the natural habitat for migrating sea and shore birds thats brings tourists and enthusiasts in thousands to observe these avian creatures. The Leaming’s Run Gardens located here recreate life as it used to be in the 18th century.

Close to Atlantic City the park covers 200 acres of diverse landscape featuring shoreline, dunes, marshland, islands and forests. You can even enjoy fishing that is quite good here. Also at hand are plenty of walking trails and of course the Cape May Lighthouse with a museum and a visitors’ center.

The Oscar E. McClinton, Jr Waterfront Park is also a great place after being cloistered in the gaming halls. This waterfront park features 4 acres of manicured lawn areas surrounded by colonnades and walkways. With a children’s play area, a boardwalk promenade and a central pavilion for sitting and viewing the sea it makes for an attractive detour.

These parks and gardens are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, daily from dawn to dusk. Admission is free.

News reports for February 4, 2009 state that Atlantic City may shortly have wind energy besides the solar energy to power the Atlantic City Convention Center. You may not have ever thought of Atlantic City going “green” but it is happening.

Atlantic City, N.J., is probably not the first place that comes to mind for environment friendly measures. But as far as the Convention Center goes, Atlantic City is about as green as it gets. It has the largest solar rooftop in the country and the second largest in the world, and it has plans to build a wind turbine.

This January, the Atlantic City Convention Center unveiled its new 2.36 megawatt solar roof, with some 13,000 solar panels that cover 300,000 square feet of roof. Solar energy generated by the roof panels will go directly into the building, which the city owns, and account for about 26 percent of the building’s power.

Convention center officials are researching the feasibility of constructing a wind turbine on the 31-acre property. The wind turbine would generate close to 20 percent of the center’s power. If the wind turbine is constructed, close to 50 percent of the convention’s center energy will come from renewable sources, with savings passed on to the customer.

It appears Atlantic City’s commitment to the environment extends to recycling as well. Last year the center recycled 45,180 pounds of paper and cardboard; 3.4 tons of glass, plastic, and aluminum bottles and cans; 47,198 pounds of carpet; 2,881 pounds of computers; 2,043 pounds of wooden pallets; and 5,574 pounds of electrical equipment. Its Green Going all the way for Atlantic City Convention Center.

It was the engineer Richard Osborne who named and designed Atlantic City. Realizing the potential of the location In early 1850s, Dr. Jonathan Pitney visualized it as a health resort spa. In 1852, along with a group of business investors he obtained the railroad charter. This brought the Camden & Atlantic Railroad to Atlantic City.

The City has never looked back since that memorable undertaking. Situated on the site of Absecon village it was duly incorporated in 1854 as Atlantic City. The resort/spa town succeeded beyond anyone’s imagination! Wealthy families from Philadelphia and other places on the East Coast flocked to the new resort.

The beaches of the town were reinvented by the creation of the first boardwalk in 1870. Townsmen laid wooden planks upon the beach so that it could be enjoyed even during hot summer days. Along with the boardwalk came eateries and amusement stands to make Atlantic City a major tourist attraction.

Vacationers and invalids coexisted happily in the Victorian-era town, living in ornate wooden boarding houses and enjoying the boardwalk in the rolling chairs that were invented in the city in 1884. The first of a half-dozen amusement piers was built in 1882, contributing to the city’s carnival-like atmosphere.

By 1887, heavy tourist traffic got a second rail line for the city. In 1895 a visitor returning from Europe introduced to local merchants German-style picture postcards which instantly became popular on Atlantic City souvenir stands.

With the first Miss America Pageant held here in 1921, every one had heard of Atlantic City. The Atlantic City Auditorium Hall on the boardwalk opened in 1929. It was in 1929 that Charles Darrow introduced Monopoly, the board game that made Atlantic City’s streets - household names throughout America!
